South Dakota SKYWARN Spotters Monitor Severe Convective Storms across the Plains

During summer severe weather events across South Dakota, trained SKYWARN storm spotters deploy along major highways to track supercell thunderstorms and tornadoes.

Equipped with mobile VHF radios and weather radar displays, spotters report cloud structures, wall clouds, and large hail to net control stations for immediate relay to NWS forecast offices.

These ground-truth observations play a critical role in timely warning generation for eastern and central South Dakota communities.
